Long COVID

Are you suffering from the effects of Long COVID? We can help to shorten your recovery!

Long Covid is the term used to describe the effects of COVID-19 that continue for weeks or even months beyond the initial illness and can affect your entire body. The symptoms can often change and can even come and go over time.

The severity of symptoms varies from person to person and we are only just starting to understand the effects and extent of the problem. Thankfully, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists are well placed to treat many of the symptoms associated with Long COVID.

What is Long COVID and How Long Does it Last?

Long COVID refers to symptoms that persist for weeks or months after the initial COVID-19 infection, affecting multiple body systems. The condition varies greatly between individuals—symptoms can change, fluctuate, and differ in severity over time. Recovery timelines are highly individual and influenced by many factors, but with a proactive management plan, people can reduce the severity of their symptoms and gradually improve their function and quality of life.

Recognising the Wide-Ranging Symptoms of Long COVID

While the list of potential symptoms is long, physiotherapy is well-placed to help with many of the most common ones.

  • Overwhelming Fatigue: A level of tiredness that is disproportionate to the activity performed.
  • Respiratory Issues: Shortness of breath, persistent cough, and chest tightness.
  • Musculoskeletal Pain: Aches in the muscles and joints. Specifically low back pain is a recognised symptom for many.
  • Neurological Problems: “Brain fog”, difficulty concentrating, headaches, dizziness, and pins and needles are all some symptoms associated with long covid
  • Sleep Disturbances: Difficulty falling or staying asleep (insomnia)

How to Bounce Back: Managing Post-COVID Exercise Intolerance

Exercise intolerance is a common symptom of Long COVID, where even mild activity can lead to fatigue or symptom flare-ups. Unlike traditional recovery approaches that encourage “pushing through,” this method can be counterproductive and delay progress.

Instead, a graded return to activity- focuses on a safe, gradual increase in movement. Our tailored exercise programmes are designed using a graded phased approach to rebuild strength, stamina, and confidence at a sustainable pace, helping you recover without causing setbacks.

When Can You Start Exercising After COVID?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to how much exercise is right after Long COVID, it depends entirely on your individual symptoms and recovery stage. A professional assessment helps determine a safe and appropriate starting point.

At Recover Physio, we guide you through a gradual process of returning to exercise, first focusing on mobility and how the body, especially the pelvis, moves. From there, we work on core activation and progressively build toward functional exercises, tailored to your individual goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does physiotherapy help long Covid?

Absolutely. Physiotherapy is highly effective for managing many Long Covid symptoms, including extreme fatigue, breathlessness, and aching muscles. We create tailored programmes that focus on functional rehabilitation and targeted exercises. Our goal is to help you understand your symptoms, manage your energy levels, and gradually rebuild your strength and quality of life.

How can I speed up long Covid recovery?

While there’s no single “quick fix,” the most effective strategy is pacing. This involves carefully balancing activity and rest to manage your energy and avoid the “boom and bust” cycle that can set you back. A physiotherapist helps you establish a safe baseline and creates a structured plan, incorporating sleep strategies and gentle movement. Ironically, the best way to recover “faster” is by starting slowly and respecting your body’s new limits.

Should you exercise when you have long Covid?

This requires a very careful approach. While traditional, strenuous exercise should be avoided, gentle movement is an essential part of recovery. We strongly advise against “pushing through” fatigue, as this can worsen symptoms. A physiotherapist will start you with breathing exercises and very gentle activity, using a ‘graded’ approach to slowly and safely rebuild your strength and stamina only when your body is ready.

How do you treat long Covid muscle pain?

We treat the muscle and joint pain associated with Long Covid using several methods. Gentle, hands-on physiotherapy can help relieve immediate aches and tension. We also introduce specific, light stretching and mobility exercises to restore movement without draining your energy. This pain is often linked to overall fatigue, so implementing pacing strategies is also a key part of managing it effectively.
